ThéRâPie-Ochaya: a little Japanese cocoon in the heart of Luxembourg
A 100% vegetarian menu tested in Luxembourg
There are places you go to eat. And others you go to slow down. ThéRâPie-Ochaya clearly belongs to the second category. From the moment you step inside, the tone is set: calm, softness, simplicity. A space designed as a pause — away from the city’s rush — where time is meant to be taken.
A shōjin ryōri–inspired lunch menu
I tried the lunch menu inspired by shōjin ryōri, the traditional Japanese Buddhist plant-based cuisine. I had the chance to experience this cuisine during my trip to Japan, and it was a real joy to find it again here in Luxembourg.
The menu I enjoyed that day:
Pumpkin noodles served with a delicately fragrant vegetable broth
Seaweed in different textures: jelly, fried and marinated
Roasted carrot served with a fermented almond cream infused with white miso
Smoked tofu with sake pearls and vegetable jus
Tea-infused daikon
Precise, well-balanced dishes, without unnecessary showmanship. Every element has its place, every flavor is clear.
This is a demanding plant-based cuisine, but above all a deeply coherent one.
“
I tried their shōjin ryōri–inspired lunch menu, a Buddhist plant-based cuisine rarely found here, and it was simply amazing.
The wagashi, a true house specialty
Impossible to leave without tasting the wagashi, true pillars of Japanese confectionery tradition.
That day, I tried:
A savory steamed cake combining fermented miso, kinako and black sesame
Akiakane, a delicate nerikiri filled with a chocolate ganache
Sakura Dōmyōji, a rice cake wrapped in a delicately scented cherry leaf
And a final wagashi centered around chestnut, soft and delicate
A refined approach, respectful of tradition, where indulgence never overshadows subtlety.
An experience true to the spirit of Japan.
Having had the opportunity to travel to Japan, what I found here felt right — not only in the flavors, but also in the intention. No unnecessary folklore, no excess. Just a sincere approach, rooted in respect for both the ingredients and the traditions.
Special mention for the owner’s commitment, with great attention paid to sourcing, small producers, and the quality of the products offered.
The selection of sake and teas alone is worth the visit.
Why does ThéRâPie-Ochaya deserve its place on Best Veggie Tables?
Because the plant-based cuisine is mastered with real precision, because this kind of offering remains rare in Luxembourg, and above all because the experience is calm, coherent, and never betrays the Japanese spirit.
A place that respects culture, ingredients, and time — and one you naturally want to return to.
